Overview
Interior design project for the renewal of the former staff cafeteria located on the east side of the 18th floor of the Tokyo Opera City Building. This project follows our previous design work on the same floor―the cafe lounge “SORANIWA” and open pantry―as well as the 7th-floor conference room area.
The 18th floor was updated to allow office occupants to choose their ideal environment depending on their dining style. The floor now features the relaxing cafe lounge “SORANIWA”, an open pantry where users can bring their own meals, and this project, the staff cafeteria ”Sora Kitchen,” a dedicated dining area where tenants can enjoy a full meal during work breaks.

The client required a solution that maintained the capacity of approximately 320 seats for building occupants while making use of the existing layout and ceiling structure, unifying the space with minimal signage and graphic elements.
Similar to the cafe lounge “SORANIWA” on the same floor, the view of the Shinjuku skyscraper skyline through the dado-height windows left a strong impression. To honor this feature, we installed counters that extend seamlessly from the window sills, creating a staff cafeteria where people can enjoy meals while taking in the surrounding scenery. By aligning all table heights with the dado-window level, we unified the visual line throughout the space, resulting in a clean and cohesive atmosphere.

Because staff cafeterias are used daily by a large number of people, the furniture needed to offer high durability suitable for a dining environment. Additionally, since the space is expected to host frequent events, the layout required high flexibility.
For the tables, we used high-pressure melamine laminate for the centers and paired them with solid oak edges. This combination ensures easy maintenance while giving the impression of an expansive hall filled entirely with solid wood furniture. Furthermore, casters were integrated into the table bases, allowing the layout to be easily reconfigured.
The matching dining chairs are made from laminated oak and feature a stackable design. All furniture pieces were manufactured by Karimoku Furniture. By incorporating the same tables and chairs into the adjacent open pantry, we created a sense of continuity throughout the connected spaces within the building.
